NEW START TREATY UP FOR SENATE RATIFICATION IN 3 WEEKS

START TREATY UP FOR SENATE VOTE IN THREE WEEKS -

NOW'S THE TIME TO CALL LEMIEUX AND OTHER REPUBLICAN SENATORS

Last Thursday, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations voted to send the new START Treaty to the full Senate. Special thanks go to Katie Heald, coordinator of the Campaign for a Nuclear Weapons Free World and Deputy Political Director of Peace Action West, who spearheaded a month-long campaign of thousands of calls. The result - Ranking Republican Senator Richard Lugar and two other Repulicans joined the Democratic majority for a 14-4 vote in favor of the treaty.

The next step is the full Senate vote. 67 votes are needed for passage. The Democrats want to get a vote before the current session ends on October 8. That's only have three weeks - the time to act is now.

New Yorkers like me are fortunate to have both our Senators already on board for the Treaty.  So we're joining neighbor states in pressuring nine key Republican Senators on the East Coast to vote YES.  All the East Coast peace groups can work together on this.

  • ME Senator Olympia Snowe (202) 224-5344
  • ME Susan Collins (202) 224-2523
  • NH Judd Gregg (202) 224-3324
  • MA Scott Brown (202) 224-4543
  • OH George Voinovich (202) 224-3353
  • NC Richard Burr (202) 224-3154
  • TN Lamar Alexander (202) 224-4944
  • GA Saxby Chambliss (202) 224-3521
  • FL George S. LeMieux (202) 224-3041
Most Congressional email contact forms are set up to block out-of-state zip codes. So if you're out of state, don't use email - pick up the phone and make some calls. Citizen calls to out-of-state Senators on key foreign policy issues are not only legitimate, they've been encouraged by the Senate Foreign Policy Committee.

SAMPLE PHONE SCRIPT:

Hello. I'd like to speak to the person in charge of foreign policy issues, please.

Wait for possible re-connection to Foreign Policy Aide.

My concern is about the coming vote on ratification of the new START Treaty. The Republican leadership on this important issue has been admirable. Last Thursday, Senator Lugar, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Policy Commitee, as well as Senators Corker and Isaakson, joined with the majority to bring this vital Treaty to a full Senate vote. I would like to see the Senator join this broad, bipartisan consensus. Ratifying this treaty is a key step forward for lasting peace and security for our country and a beacon of hope for the whole world. Please relay my concern to the Senator: VOTE YES.  RATIFY THE START TREATY.

Wait for response. If asked for your name, give it.

If asked for your address and you're out of state, say: I'm from [State], and I'm calling because this is a national, even international issue that goes well beyond state lines. I appreciate that the Senator takes these issues seriously and listens to all citizens who are concerned about the welfare of our country.

Thank you.

In Peace,
