School of the Americas Watch

The US Army School of Americas (SOA), based in Fort Benning, Georgia, trains Latin American soldiers in combat, counter-insurgency, and counter-narcotics. Graduates of the SOA are responsible for some of the worst human rights abuses in Latin America. Among the SOA's nearly 60,000 graduates are notorious dictators Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola of Argentina, Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru, Guillermo Rodriguez of Ecuador, and Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia. Lower-level SOA graduates have participated in human rights abuses that include the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero and the El Mozote Massacre of 900 civilians.

SOA Watch is an independent organization that seeks to close the US Army School of the Americas, under whatever name it is called, through vigils and fasts, demonstrations and nonviolent protest, as well as media and legislative work. The FCPJ participates in the SOA at Ft. Benning, GA, the weekend before Thanksgiving each year, as a silent protest.

PROJECTS

Common Ground

An annual conference traditionally held at Rollins College (near Orlando) which brings together progressive Floridians for workshops and panel discussions on topics selected annually. The goal of Common Ground is to get informed and then to let our unified voices be heard!

Dr. Benjamin Spock Peacemaker of the Year

In 1992, the Coalition decided to establish an annual Dr. Benjamin Spock Peacemaker of the Year Award and has made the Award annually since then, with the sole exception of 1993.

Click here to learn more about the award, all recipients of the award, and the prime reason for their selections.

Just Peace

Just Peace is the official newsmagazine of the FCPJ. Published twice a year, Just Peace is a forum for alternative thoughts and ideas not normally offered to the general public. Quite often, we receive articles and letters that are included in the publication. It is testimony to the value of submitting letters to the editor as a means of stimulating thought and raising awareness amongst the general public.

Peace Camp

At Peace Camp we are a multi-cultural gathering of youth and adults who come together to find ways in which our lives can make a difference. We learn the joy and benefit of serving each other in order to enrich our week-long Peace Camp community and our lifelong global community. We learn to use creative nonviolent methods to achieve justice and equity as an outcome of the way we live our lives.

Keep Space for Peace

Global Network was founded in 1982 by the joint efforts of the FCPJ, Citizens for Peace in Space (Colorado Springs) and New York-based Journalism professor Karl Grossman. Since its 1992 founding, the GN has met each year in order to bring together key activists who are working on, or are interested in space issues. It was the intention of the founders to create an organization that would serve as a clearinghouse for space issues and act as a spark to ignite education and organizing in order to build an international citizens movement.
