Overview of Meeting
Featured Speaker and Presenter: Jeff Milchen, Founder of
From the ReclaimDemocracy.org website:
ReclaimDemocracy.org works to create a representative democracy with an actively participating public, where citizens don't merely choose from a menu of options determined by elites, but play an active role in guiding the country and its political agenda. We believe that one's influence should be a direct result of the quality of one's ideas and the energy one puts into promoting these ideas, independent of wealth or status.
Jeff also founded:
American Independent Business Alliance
From the AMIBA website:
We help communities prevent the displacement of locally-owned independent businesses, ensure ongoing opportunities for entrepreneurs, and advance citizen engagement in directing the development of their community through:
Convocation Opening Session
Convocation convenes with the recognition of the 40th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination on this day in 1968. We will hear about the strategies Dr. King used in his successful campaigns to overturn the legal structures and social customs that enforced discrimination and injustice in the United States and how he worked to change his country in both words and deeds.
We will also hear a presentation and update on the work of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers as they struggle to improve their lives by forcing concessions from several of the major corporations feeding the US and the world today.
This opening session will offer both inspiration and practical suggestions on how we can continue the work to restore economic and social justice in our country and around the world.
Keynote Speech and Best Practices Panels
The day begins with a keynote speech by Jeff Milchen who will provide the historical foundation we need to recognize the scope and nature of the problems facing us today. His analysis of the conflict between the requirements of democracy and the overwhelming power of global corporations in the political life of our nation offers a useful perspective on the roots of our problems and leads to strategies we can employ to address them effectively.
Following Jeff’s comments, four breakout sessions exploring various aspects of the work we need to be engaged in will provide convocation attendees with a more detailed and interactive discussion of specific issues and Best Practices. During each of the four sessions, multiple workshops and panels will be offered. Jeff will lead the workshops of one track focusing on regaining control and accountability of corporations. Another track will be organized around the critical work of ending the war in Iraq. Other tracks will present examples of what activists are doing around the state of Florida to advance the cause of Peace and Justice in their communities using ideas and programs they have developed locally.
Lunch will be provided but dinner will be on your own so conversations begun during the day can be carried on over a meal and socializing.
An evening program will be more informal and unstructured to allow for opportunities to enjoy music, videos and small group discussions springing from various resources convocation participants would like to share with the group.
Regional Organizing and Closing
Our work on Sunday will focus on building the effectiveness and capacity of our state-wide organizing. We will introduce a proposed regional structure and, to the extent possible with the people present, break into regional caucuses to develop more specific actions plans to implement the many great ideas generated over the course of the weekend. After an opportunity to express comments about how the convocation met our needs and expectations, we will discuss the next steps we will take to build on what we did over the weekend to move the Culture of Peace forward in Florida.
